New Year, New You!

As the rollercoaster of the year that was 2018 draws to a close, we are looking to 2019 with optimism. The increase in demand for talent and growth across all our markets has enabled us to expand. We have significantly added to our London team, moved to a bigger office and now have an established team of professionals who cover 10 languages fluently. Our Manchester team continues to grow with all our specialist sector teams welcoming new talent in the last 6 months.

As a business, we are going through a significant period of growth, reacting to the strength of the market and our clients’ demand for talent, however, what if you aren’t feeling overly excited for the new year because of your job? We are all susceptible to the odd bout of the Monday blues, but if you can’t remember the last time you left work feeling positive, it may be time for a move.

LinkedIn recently published statistics highlighting that the months of January to March see the biggest increase in candidates looking for a new role: the “new year, new me” resolution is evidently a widespread motivator! Maybe you feel static in your role and no longer challenged, or your work/life balance is unhealthy and you are feeling stressed or maybe, you don’t feel appreciated by your boss.

Studies have shown that we spend on average around 30 percent of our lives at work and we believe you owe it to yourself to make sure that you are happy in it! If any of the above has resonated with you, follow these tips and make 2019 a great year.

Your CV: this is your platform to sell yourself to potential employers. It can seem a bit of a daunting task if you haven’t had to write one for a while, however, you really need to make sure it is strong to make you stand out amongst the other applicants and help to secure you that first interview. Ensure it doesn’t read like a job spec, employers know the duties of the job they are recruiting for, what they really want to see are your achievements along with the skills and attributes you have which certify that you will be a great asset to the company.

Interviews: the dreaded interview actually doesn’t have to be so dreaded if you make sure you are prepared beforehand. Show your punctuality and arrive 10 mins early and make sure you are smartly dressed. Research the company, look up the people you will be meeting on LinkedIn and make sure you have prepared a couple of questions to ask at the end (this part of the interview is a good opportunity to find out about the company culture or plans for the future).

Resilience: you have taken the plunge and secured an interview for what you believe is your next dream job only to find out that you haven’t made it past the first round. Try not to be disheartened and instead, see it as a positive experience in which you have been able to practice your interview technique. It is always a good idea to contact the hiring manager for interview feedback so you are able to learn from it and apply anything learnt to subsequent interviews.

Selective: you may be tempted to accept the first role you are offered especially if you are feeling under pressure financially, however, it is vital you are picky. Take a long look at the reasons why you want to leave the role you are currently in and ensure that your new position ticks all of your boxes. Searching for a job can be a tiresome process – you don’t want to end up in the same position again a couple of months down the line.

Network: research your chosen market and ensure you connect with specialists in that area to assist you with your job search. You are not alone! At Foundation Recruitment we a have a team of consultants who are on hand to do just this, let us take the stress out of your job search and help to find you the dream role to make 2019 the best year yet!
